Offered is this wonderful 1920's-1930's pair of period, vintage figurative solid brass candlesticks with wonderful meandering, spiraling upward, long, tailed dragons decorating the candlestick's ascending central stems. The solid brass stems sit on top of hollow brass half spheres, which are decorated with Chinese sgraffito incised marks in the form of geometric patterning and images of dragons, repeating the more sculptural, bas-relief dragons depicted on the stems of the candlesticks. The candle holders end with an attached, fluted top and silled reservoir, to collect the dripping wax and preventing the melted wax from dripping down and coagulating on the decorative shafts and obscuring the carved dragon imagery. Only one of the stick's fluted brass reservoirs has a very slight warp, most likely caused by a previous tumble.
This is not fatal and only makes the pair less than perfect, whereas without this, they would be nearly perfect. A very handsome duo indeed and with really superb, extraordinarily detailed figuration of spiraling dragons. Great vintage Chinese brass candlesticks. What's lighting up your food on your dinner table?
