Ruyi (Chinese for "as one/you wish") is a curved decorative object that is a ceremonial scepter in Chinese Buddhism or a talisman symbolizing power and good fortune in Chinese folklore.
A traditional ruyi has a long S-shaped handle and a head fashioned like a fist, cloud, or lingzhi mushroom. A Ruyi / lotus scepter is also the emblem of He Xiangu, one of the Eight Daoist immortals. The Yang (female principle) character of the Ruyi is often indicated by its similarity to the Lingzhi fungus and to Clouds.
During the Qing dynasty it was customary for the Emperor to present deserving generals, nobles and ministers of state with gifts of jade Ruyi scepters as a mark of favor. Ruyi are constructed from diverse materials, such as gold, silver, iron, bamboo, wood, coral, lacquer, crystal, jade, and precious gems. This quite powerful and evocative example is made from brass. And depicts the Eight Immortals, a group of legendary xian in Chinese mythology.
It measures 22.4 inches in width by 4.4 inches depth by 3.9 inches height (56.8 cm by 11.1 cm by 9.90 cm). It is in very good condition and shows wear consistent with use, dating to the mid-19th century.
